Niton to St Lawrence

Isle of  Wight

Old postcards are sometimes poorly produced and grainy, I've done my best to scan them. Please click thumbnails for full size picture. Dates are from the card or my estimate (where possible). The manufacturer of the card is shown in brackets (where available).

Whitwell shop & Post Office

Whitwell church

The village store and Post Office, Whitwell in the 60's. (Nigh)

An undated card of Whitwell church, said to be 1906.

Cripple path, Niton

st lawrence old church

The Cripples path, from the base of the Undercliff to the top.

The term 'cripple' apparently did not apply to any medical

condition, but probably from a word meaning 'burrow' or 'drain'. (Stengel)

St Lawrence old church prior to 1907. This church was built

in the 12th century and is one of the smallest churches in

the country. A larger church was built in the village in 1876. (Wrench)

St Lawrence from the Upper Cliff

St Lawrence village

St Lawrence from the Upper Cliff, 1905. (Vincent)

St Lawrence in the 1930's (from the I.O.W. village series). (Photochrom)

St. Rhadagunds, St Lawrence

Queen Mary hedge, St lawrence

St Rhadagunds, St. Lawrence. Build around 1870, the tower was added in the 1900's. It is now a christian holiday centre. (Frith)

This hedge cut to look like the Queen Mary was in the garden

of a house at St Lawrence, coaches used to stop and you

looked down to it. It was there in the early 60's but no longer.

Woody Bay Woody Bay Coastguard Station

Woody Bay, near St Lawrence, undated. This was the site of

the (then) largest cocaine seizure in the country. The Isle of

Wight now has no operational customs officers. (Photochrom)

Woody Bay Coastguard Station, probably around 1910. (Photochrom)
